Beilan Island Incident

The Beilan Island Incident was a catastrophic containment failure that occurred in 2030, in Beilan Island (Chinese: 北兰岛), off the coast of Shanghai. The incident began when a group of seven middle-school students trespassed the quarantined perimeter of the Beilan Island Precursor Ruins and were subsequently attacked by mutated sufferers of Eurosky Low-Emission Infectious Disease (ELID), thought to be caused by exposure to collapse fluid. The Shanghai government sent in a strike team to rescue the teens, but due to the island's remote location and the number of infected, the team was unable to maintain the perimeter and as a last resort used explosives on the sealed main entrance in an attempt to permanently block off the ruins. The explosion ruptured the precursor ruins and culminated in the release of concentrated collapse fluid into Earth's atmosphere, which would then spread across the world via trade winds and render the majority of the land around the equator uninhabitable.

Due to the widespread biochemical fallout of this event, it is regarded as one of the most disastrous calamities to befall the human race, with the death toll of the event a direct cause for the development of dolls and frame robot technology. To date no attempt has been made the re-seal the Beilan Island Ruins and it can be assumed that most of the collapse fluid contained within the facility has already leaked into the atmosphere.

Background[edit]

Initial Discovery[edit]

The Beilan Island Precursor Ruins was first discovered and identified as a precursor ruin in the 1960s by the People's Republic of China. The most important aspect of the ruin was the discovery of the first and only known intact precursor carcass located inside the ruins, named GAVIRUL. The Chinese government successfully recovers the alien corpse and the rest of the ruins, thought to be safe, is left under the jurisdiction of Shanghai. Unaware of the consequences, the city begins construction projects twelve years later around the island, which resulted in the accidental rupture of several tanks of collapse fluid underground. As a result, several workers around the area came into contact with the volatile vapors of the fluid and quickly became afflicted with ELID. Unsure of how to deal with the strange new outbreak, the Shanghai government quarantined the infected and set up a perimeter around the island, sealing off the entrance to the ruins as a cautionary measure. The containment is successful and, due to the highly secretive nature of alien research at the time of the Cold War Era, the entire incident is swept under the rug and avoids major public notice.

Result[edit]

After around fifteen months, the containment alert is lifted and work around the site continues largely uninterrupted as the collapse fluid is kept mostly contained by the seal.[1] An attempt to create a vaccine for ELID, now confirmed to be caused by an alien virus, is made, but a lack of demand for the vaccine (due to all the afflicted having been sealed inside the ruins) causes the project to fade into obscurity with no successful vaccine ever made.[2] GAVIRUL gains the attention of the United Nations in the early 1990s, with a UN Commission assigned to researching the genetic reproduction and biological construction of the alien carcass. Though an attempt at splicing together alien and human DNA is successful, the resultant twin human children have no outstanding qualities besides faster aging and the entire project is ultimately shelved in 2012. By this time, the Beilan Island Ruins had been largely forgotten and the containment perimeter around the area had grown lax due to lack of any unusual events.[3]

Containment Failure[edit]

In 2030, a group of seven middle-school children were able to breach the poorly-maintained perimeter and made their way into the ruins, where they were attacked by mutant ELID sufferers. The city of Shanghai sent a team of police agents to rescue the students, however the damage had already been done and the team was attacked by a swarm of infected. While the fate of the children is unknown, the strike team was ultimately unable to deal with the large volume of attackers and planted several explosives within the ruins, hoping to cause a cave-in to permanently seal off the ruins and prevent the infected from breaching the main perimeter. Unfortunately, the detonation of these explosives caused a chemical chain reaction within the facility, causing a huge explosion and exposing the ruins to the surface. Although not a true "fluid", the wave-propagation properties of collapse fluid allow almost all physical materials (such as air and water) to easily absorb and carry it, resulting in the highly corrosive and mutative "fluid" to rapidly spread across the world. [4]

Fallout[edit]

The fluid is thought to have been blown west and towards the equator by the northern trade winds, most likely spreading across Asia and southwest towards India. From there, the cloud would continue onwards to northern Africa and parts of the Middle East before moving across the Sahara Desert and into the Atlantic Ocean. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the fluid would arrive in the Caribbean before contaminating all of Latin America above the equator along with much of the southern Unites States. Depending on the time of year, hurricanes may have carried the gas northwards to contaminate the northeastern coast of the United States as well.[5]

Aftermath[edit]

The fallout caused by the Beilan Island Incident effectively cut the world in half, with the majority of untainted land located to the north and south of the equator. The resulting near-apocalypse situation forced many countries to reevaluate their borders as a large fraction of the world's population was forced to evacuate or die trying. Most of Europe would be untouched by collapse fluid but the subsequent tides of refugees and infected would force counties to reorganize and redraw their boundaries, leading to the creation of the Pan European Union as well as the reformation of the Soviet Union into the New Soviet Union. The surviving populations of North America, South America, Australia, Asia, and Africa are likely to have done the same, forced to unite their populations as the death toll grew larger and larger. Due to a lack of available manpower, research into frame robots began, ultimately resulting in the creation of dolls, both worker-type A-Dolls as well as fighting-oriented T-Dolls, to support the dwindling human population. Disputes over land and resources would ultimately lead to a World War III between the remaining powers of the world, resulting in the rise of both IOP and Sangvis Ferri as Europe's top producers of T-Dolls.[6]

Trivia[edit]

  • Japan and Korea may have survived the Beilan Island Incident thanks to the direction of the trade winds blowing the fallout directly away from them, despite their proximity to the disaster. This is a possible explanation for many of the Asian-themed furniture sets and costumes.
